The monsoon transforms India. Kerala turns emerald, the Western Ghats fill with waterfalls, and Rajasthan’s desert finally feels alive.

Where to go when it rains

Pick destinations with good monsoon seasons, such as Kerala, Meghalaya and Coorg. Each one is at its greenest from June to September, and hotels are quieter and better value.

  • Kerala: Ayurveda retreats and misty backwater cruises
  • Meghalaya: living root bridges and roaring waterfalls
  • Coorg: coffee estates wrapped in clouds
  • Udaipur: lakes that fill up after the first heavy showers

Where to wait for later

Avoid the Himalayan roads during peak rainfall, when landslides can disrupt travel. Beach activities in Goa and the Andamans are also limited, as many water sports pause for the season.

What to pack

Pack light rain gear, quick-dry clothes and a waterproof cover for your phone. Sandals with a good grip are more useful than sneakers, which take days to dry.
